A Short Sojourn South

As usual we motored the whole way to Barra Navidad and then back again, still better than bashing into anything.  We liked the sleepy local town of Barra, the lagoon and narrow channel made for a very quiet anchorage with just a couple of other yachts.  Our friend Randy was looking after a rather run down 30 metre motor yacht, so we had access to the pool and facilities at the fancy marina and hotel.  The ‘French Baker’ brought fresh baguettes and pastries most mornings to the anchorage – quite a treat!

Tenacatita some 10 miles north had not changed in the few years since we were heading north from Panama.  Though being Easter the deserted camping ground was really ‘chokkers’ with Mexican campers.  Still, a delightful beach and anchorage with, again, just a few yachts.

An easy 4 hour motor to Coronado Island in Bay de Chamela, had us anchoring off another small, deserted white sandy beach.  Water still pretty cool around 20 Deg C, with a steady 1 metre ground swell from the South.  Diving was rather poor due to the large quantites of spawn in many places – the dark green murky sea very different from the azul colour found in the North Sea of Cortez.  Just a mile or so to the North was the fishing village of Perula.  We were now pretty comfortable with beach landings in the swell, though Mel still managed a few ‘wipe out’s’ – picking the lulls while paddling in not so easy.

An excellent beach breakfast, miles of beach walking, and reasonable supply of groceries meant several easy days of lazy living.  An early morning (0100) try to head north  was aborted after two hours of bashing into a sloppy Northerly – no worries as just 3 days later a light SW’ly gave an easy motor back to Punta Mita.  Still a wonderful spot for the whole family, spending most of the late afternoon ashore as both Ben and Huon having a ball on the boogie boards in the comfortable beach breaks.  Daylight saving has us kayaking back around 18.00 for a late dinner.

Now just a couple of days before heading into Paradise Village Marina for Mel’s mum visit – the boys are hyped!!
